National Seafood Survey – Fisheries (NSS)

BIM’s annual National Seafood Survey, collecting data for 2024, runs October 2025 to January 2026 and can be completed on desktops, laptops, tablets, and mobile devices.

Completing the survey is a legal requirement and a condition of grants you may apply for in the next 12 months.

What is the purpose of the survey?

BIM conducts an annual survey in which all active vessels are requested to submit economic, employment, and operational details for their previous year’s activity. The findings of the survey provide key data and insights into the status of Ireland’s fishing sector on an annual basis. The returns form the basis for the justification of national and EU grant aid programmes, focused on supporting the industry and coastal communities. View the findings of last year’s surveys.

Previous survey users

If you have previously registered and used the online survey, you can access the survey using your log in details.

I have not completed the online survey before, how do I register?

You will need to register your email address and set up a password to gain access to the survey. You can register for the BIM online survey by clicking ‘sign up now’ on the BIM Online Survey Login page.

Please note, if you register out of office hours or over the weekend, it may take up to 48 hours for your account to go live and your password to work. Once your account has been linked to the vessel by BIM, you can use your log in and password to access the survey.

How do I complete the survey?

• Small vessel survey (under 10m)– the vessel owner completes all sections of the survey.
• Large vessel survey (over 10m)– the vessel owner completes section 1 (i.e., vessel and crew questions). For section 2 (i.e., income, costs, assets etc.), you have the option to complete it yourself or nominate an accountant/bookkeeper to complete it on your behalf. BIM will email your accountant/bookkeeper a request to register plus a link to access their part of the survey. If you select this option, the responsibility is on the vessel owner to ensure section 2 has been completed by your accountant/bookkeeper. Payments from BIM will be delayed if section 2 has not been completed.

The data you submit is anonymised, grouped into fleet segments, and submitted to the EU in accordance with EU Commission Delegated Decision (EU) 2021/1167. No individual vessels/entity/person can be identified from the data submitted.
